On “Back to Scratch” (2010) she co-wrote most of the songs, which makes the album very personal, absolutely true and honest, at times a bit melancholic.

She already went into that same direction with her last album “Tissues and Issues”, but both her voice and her songwriting skills have grown even more over the last years. The melodies are comfortable to listen to, her voice doesn’t drown in electronic instruments and the lyrics are gorgeous and meaningful.

I like classical or so-called cross-over music and I loved Charlotte from her very first album, but these new albums are a lot more “her”. Personally, I do not want her to go back to her old music at all. So check out her “new” album “Back to Scratch”, if you like good pop/ folk ballads.

How can I report on an event that can hardly be described by words alone? Is it actually possible to write about Josh on a pure matter-of-fact way at all? I admit that I’m bias, but who can “know” Josh and not love him?!

Josh’s voice alone would be enough reason to truly enjoy his concerts, but it would be nothing more than a great concert. What makes an evening with Josh on stage really unique is his witty humor, his boy-next-door attitude and the great fun that the whole “Swoon Union” (incl. Josh of course) spreads over us all. Their energy and joy is so contagious, that it’s impossible to sit still at times.

The set-list may only include very few of his Illumination songs, but the repertoire could hardly be more versatile. Josh took us on a colorful journey through all kinds of genres, sang in four different languages, played piano and drums, made us laugh and cry, sing and dance. His voice could not have been any more powerful, his behavior more loveable.

Even most of the fantastic Groband members got their own moments to shine during their solo parts. Even the new percussionist, who did his first show in Düsseldorf, didn’t hesitate to join in the awesome drum battle.

We were greeted with a few German words – did Christian help there? – and a story about trying to sit down in a restaurant to eat his fish soup without being chased away because all the seats were reserved. We have to make sure, that his dream comes true, that next time he comes to Düsseldorf, he will be famous enough to not having to sit on the floor in the end. So let’s spread the Josh even more! But we made up for this experience with our love and enthusiasm – enough to make them repeat the last versus of “Voce”, we wouldn’t stop clapping and dancing, we didn’t let the song end.

Soon it was time for the moment of truth for Josh. He told us about his favorite book characters from his childhood, told us about “James and the giant peach” and a book with the title “Joshua and the purple crayon”, which he loved so much, that his parents threw it away in the end, because he painted the whole living room purple. Poor, little Josh… And of course he would have loved to be Charlie in the chocolate factory to eat as much candy as he wanted to. He joked about wanting to get a full-body-tattoo with the faces of all his fans to pay back for those who have his face tattooed on them and he did some brilliant imitations of the family guy and Michael Jackson. Only his moon walk turned out to look more like an epileptic fit – at least one thing Josh is not good at! He’s only human after all.

After “Machine” he opened Casa Groban for a couple and two nervous young ladies. Of course Josh wished them all luck for their future, that their prince charming would come on a golden horse… through their window… to take them to… Norway. Well Josh, sometime it would be wise to think about how to end a sentence before you actually start it. But we love him even when talks crap. Good thing, he didn’t take himself too serious, when he explained, that that’s how he flirts and the reason why he was still single. The comforting hug from the man on the couch was not exactly what he asked for either.

Too soon we joined him in the finale “You raise me up” and then it was time to wave goodbye. But we did not let him go without two more encores, which he, Tariqh and Mark seemed more than willing to give.

Thanks a million, Josh and team, for 2 hours that I will not forget in a long time! And of course thanks for the opportunity to be the road reporter and to meet Josh in a dry (!) environment before the show. By the way: watch out for the signed poster in the next charity auction!

With front row seats right in the center, I expected to have the orchestra close by. What I found was the beginning of the stage less than one meter away from me on height of my knees. The orchestra was unfortunately placed behind the stage instead, more or less out of sight. One can’t have everything…

The cast in Malmö was brilliant: Dan Ekborg – brother of the awesome “Freddy Trumper”/ “Karl Oskar” Anders Ekborg – was a vocally strong, emotional and convincing Valjean; only his very wet singing lost him a few points and made me in my front row seat worry at times.

Fred Johanson owned the stage as Javert! With perfect viciousness and obsessive sense of justice in his acting and a full classical voice, somewhere between baritone and bass, he had me right away – at not only me as the frantic applause in the end showed.

Another pleasant surprise was Philip Jalmelid. After having seen Michael Lewis, I never thought there could be another man to match him as Marius, but Philip (almost) did. His performance was romantic and moving, his voice a perfect, warm baritone. Goosebumps and tears during “Empty chairs”…

It was only Karolin Funke as Fantine, who was a bit disappointing for me. Her voice was good, no doubt, but she was way too aggressive, almost arrogant and hard to play that role. Even her dying scene left me rather cold. The rest of the cast was good and gave a solid and pleasant performing but left no marks on me.

Les Miserables is sure a musical masterpiece and the music can speak for itself with a good cast; the stage-setting and props should do no more than support the story. The responsible people in Malmö went a bit too far with big and bizarre properties, which were placed all over the stage most of the time, often more in the way than helpful. The same can be said about the choreography. There was so much movement from the huge ensemble on stage, so that it was hard to focus on the important roles and the music sometimes. Some scenes felt disturbing and rather weird. A little more simplicity and quiet would have been better for the show. Even the costumes were not only different and simpler, but at times too modern, even grotesque.

But most important: the music was as perfect as ever, the cast – protagonists and ensemble – were great and the overall show was wonderful. I left the theater with both a tearful and a laughing eye and still have the songs playing in my head!

 PS. Again I realized, that waterproof mascara is of advantage when watching Les Mis on stage!

Wie zu erwarten war, hebt sich die von Rick Rubin produzierte CD in so mancher Hinsicht von Josh‘s bisherigen Alben ab. „Illuminations“ ist rein & einfach, emotional, persönlich, vielseitig, einzigartig, ergreifend, erwachsen, melancholisch & ehrlich; nicht länger bombastisch und imposant (wenn hin und wieder auch diese Attribute durch die Arrangements hindurch scheinen). Josh muss nicht länger beweisen, dass er eine große Stimme hat, er ist an einem Punkt, an dem er durchaus einen Schritt zurück treten kann ohne tatsächlich einen Rückschritt zu machen.

„Illuminations“ ist der Beweis dafür, dass Josh nicht nur ein großartiger Sänger ist, sondern auch ein begnadeter Songwriter, Komponist und Pianist, der 11 der 13 Songs selbst geschrieben hat. In Songs wie „L’ora del addio“ oder „Voce existe em mim“ läuft er stimmlich zu Höchstform auf, während er mit Songs wie „Higher Window“ direkt in die Herzen der Zuhörer singt. Mit „London Hymn“ unternimmt er einen geglückten Ausflug in die klassische (Rquiem-) Komposition, während „Wandering Kind“ einen Einblick in seine musikalische Kindheit gibt; Josh komponierte dieses Klavierstück als 12-Jähriger. Ein Besuch bei Kriegsveteranen im Krankhaus veranlasste ihn zu dem dramatischen „War at home“, seine neue Heimat dagegen inspirierte das stimmungsvolle „Bells of New York City“.

 Ich hätte nicht gedacht, dass Josh sich selbst noch so übertreffen könnte, doch „Illuminations“ ist für mich das beste Album, dass er je zustande gebracht hat – auch wenn ich mir darüber bewusst bin, dass sich an dieser CD die Geister so sehr scheiden wie an keiner anderen. Am besten die Augen schließen und nicht mit dem Kopf, sondern mit dem Herzen anhören. Denn eins ist sicher, dieses Album ist mit dem Herzen aufgenommen worden!
